Play equipment removed from Rock Park

Following repeated reports of people making use of the play area in Rock Park Barnstaple Town Council been forced to remove some of the equipment.

Despite posting signs, asking the public not to use the apparatus due the risk of transmitting the virus and subsequently padlocking the gates to the play area – some members of the public continued to ignore the request and were using the play equipment.

Alan Rennles, Barnstaple Town Mayor said “It causes us great concern that parents have been allowing their children to use the play equipment and measures put in place to stop people using the equipment removed. On top of this Town Council staff have been verbally abused when they have asked people to stop using the play area”.

It was decided at a recent video conference staff meeting, that the council had no other option other than to remove the equipment to protect the public and avoid any potential spreading of the Coronavirus.

This is consistent with current Government guidance that states that play areas must not be used.

The toilets in Rock Park also remain closed because the Town Council is not in the position to be able to ensure that that they can be kept clean enough to ensure that there is no transition of the virus.

The Park itself is still open for residents daily exercise and is being maintained and inspected.
