We were both shocked and saddened to hear of the loss of two prominent figures in Barnstaple's community.
Firstly, the loss of Brain Macbeth, an ex-town councillor who was a keen railway enthusiast, and a retired geography teacher for Park School. Brian passed on the 15th June and the funeral arrangements are as follows:
A Service of Thanksgiving for Brian's life will be held on Monday, July 1 at 2.30pm at Christ Church in Bear Street - Brian had asked for all attending to wear bright colours. Donations can be made for the Over and Above cancer and wellbeing centre appeal on the day or c/o WS Gayton and Son at Bickington.
Secondly the loss of Tom Evans, a well-known figure in the town, known for his tours and his work with the museum and the setting up and running of the Tourist information centre. Tom died on the 23rd June.
A Thanksgiving Service for Tom, to which all his friends are invited, will be at the Barnstaple Guildhall on Wednesday 3rd July at 2.30pm followed by a reception and celebration of Tom's life - please bring photos and mementos of Tom which we can all share. Donations in lieu of flowers for the Devon Wildlife Trust, may be given at the Service or c/o W S Gayton & Son, Lauderdale, Bickington, Barnstaple EX31 2LB
Both men made a considerable contribution to our town and are fondly remembered by many people.
Many of us at the Town Council had the privilege of working with them and will remember their contributions to Barnstaple for many years to come. Our deepest condolences to their families at this very sad time
